The Nigerian Natural Hair and Beauty Show took place last weekend in Lagos.  I’m not sure what was more fabulous, the shopping, the workshops, the food.. or just THE HAIR.

It was everywhere.  I mean literally.  It was Loud and very Proud. Trying to take a selfie with some certain people .. I won’t mention any names … (yagamezi, ronke raji, efik zara.. you know who you are).. was almost impossible as there wasn’t enough space in the screen with the sheer volume of hair!

In an African country you would think seeing natural hair wouldn’t be such a big deal. But in a mega city like Lagos, you’re more likely to see weaves and braids than women sporting the hair that springs out from their roots.   For some it’s simply too much of a commitment as alot of people feel that it takes far too much time and attention.

The Natural Hair and Beauty show aims to help those starting their journey as well as celebrate those that are full on converts.  Access to information and products is one of the biggest issues that alot of people have.  However.. another phrase now reigns within the natural circles…

‘Protective Styling’

This is basically saying, it’s ok to keep your hair in twists, braids, weaves, wigs etc as long as you’re looking after your hair beneath. Caring for it not forgetting about it because it’s too difficult.

So if you’re gonna wear a wig.. why not wear a kinky wig!!!  Big bouncy curls without the stress.

One of our favourite speakers at the event, the gorgeous Kiitana shows us how to create an affordable natural looking afro wig at home.
